FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — The University of Arkansas has implemented a new cybersecurity measure for students and staff.

The initiative requires a switch to Microsoft Passkey for account sign-ins to prevent phishing and account compromise, Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Data Jannette Akridge and Process Innovation Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Jim Gigantino said in a statement.

University officials said the move aims to strengthen account security across campus by replacing traditional login methods with a device-bound authentication system.

Under the new system, students and staff will verify their identity using a trusted device, such as a smartphone, alongside features like fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or a personal PIN.

Setting up Microsoft Passkey takes about 10 minutes, according to campus IT. Students and staff must download the Microsoft Authenticator app on their mobile devices to complete the setup process.

For those who prefer not to use a mobile device, the university offers hardware security keys, called YubiKeys, as an alternative authentication method for Windows and Mac.

Because passkeys are tied to specific hardware, university officials advise students who purchase new phones or have login issues to contact the IT Help Desk.

The mandatory enrollment period is open and must be completed by Dec. 15.
