FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — University of Arkansas’ Sexual & Relationship Violence Center showcases the survivor art installation “What Were You Wearing?” in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge from April 6 to April 10.
The exhibit was created at the University of Arkansas that features clothing worn by students, faculty, and staff from when they experienced sexual assault. The installation is open for viewing, with SRVC tabling throughout the afternoons for students to stop by and learn more.

According to the Susan B. Anthony Project, the installation originated in 2013 at the University of Arkansas by Jen Brockman and Dr. Mary Wyandt-Hiebert, inspired by Dr. Mary Simmerling’s poem “What I Was Wearing”. The exhibit’s goal is to reclaim space for survivors to challenge the myth to shield perpetrators and silence victims.
A peer advocate for the SRVC says she works to be a voice for services and programs that are free to students in difficult circumstances.
“This clothing has been generously given to us so that we can combat the myth that rape culture establishes,” Layla Watkins said. “It’s a scary word, and it really shouldn’t be so I want to help voice programs and services that we have because we do offer free and confidential counseling services on campus.”
The university sparked a global phenomenon, with installations displayed in at least 38 countries.
The installation will remain in the Arkansas Union Flag Room through Friday afternoon for visitors to stop by and view.
