FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – Students at the University of Arkansas School of Journalism and Strategic Media took part in a full day of networking, workshops and guest lectures Tuesday as part of the annual J-Days celebration in Kimpel Hall.
Hosted in partnership with the Lemke Journalism Alumni Society, J-Days, founded in 1931 by Walter J. Lemke, aiming to connect students with industry professionals while highlighting journalism’s role in society.
The day began with a networking event hosted by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists UARK student chapter, featuring professor Bobbie Foster and Joshua Pineda. Students gathered on the terrace to hear from professionals while enjoying churros and drinks.
“This is what J-Days is all about: giving students a chance to connect with people working in the field,” an organizer said.
Later, documentary filmmaker Dale Carpenter spoke to students in Larry Foley’s class, sharing insights from his career and the importance of storytelling in journalism.
At noon, a “Know Your Rights” workshop featured speakers including Rachel Sanches-Smith and Gina Shelton, focusing on legal protections and ethical responsibilities for student journalists.
“Understanding your rights is essential in today’s media environment,” Shelton said. “It gives journalists the confidence to do their jobs responsibly.”
The day concluded with a “Future of Journalism” discussion led by Axios reporter Alex Golden, who spoke about adapting to changes in digital media.
J-Days continues through April 10, culminating in the Roy Reed Lecture featuring Foley.
