FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The Fayetteville Farmers’ Market celebrated their 50th opening day over the weekend.

The local farmers’ market has been a staple in the community since 1973, when a group of local farmers wanted to sell their products directly to consumers. Located in downtown Fayetteville, the market has grown to host over 70 vendors providing fresh foods, art, plants, and more.

The market’s official season begins at the start of April and runs until the end of November. During this time, vendors spend every Saturday morning at the market, growing their business as well as the community. The market attracts both locals and tourists, with its diverse offerings and lively atmosphere.

One of the vendors at the market, Claire Penick, said she wakes up early every Saturday to bring quality products to the community.

“Seeing how many people show up and they put in all their efforts to be able to bring quality to the community is what fills my cup and which helps me to fill cups to give to other people,”

For Claire and many other vendors, the market is not just a way to make a living, but also a way to connect with their customers and contribute to the community.

The market generates about 1.6 million dollars annually, and every dollar spent at the market adds about 60 cents to Fayetteville’s economy. This economic impact is just one of the many benefits that the market brings to the community.

Although the market is held on select weekends throughout the off-season, many sellers look forward to the more popular spring season. For Judy Kavan, who has been selling plants at the market for over 21 years, the market is not just a place to grow her business but also a community gathering place.

“It’s my livelihood, you know that’s where I sell my product. It’s also just a really wonderful community gathering place,”

Over the years, Judy said she has seen different generations grow up and come to the market, making it an exciting and welcoming place to be.

“It’s been great seeing different generations grow up, you know I see people that I know their kids coming here and so it’s exciting. It’s a wonderful place to be.”

The market is open every Saturday from 7:30am to 2pm, rain or shine. With its vibrant atmosphere and strong community, the Fayetteville Farmers’ Market is a unique way for locals and tourists to spend their Saturday morning.
