FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design’s scholarships will be awarded Saturday, April 1st. The school will offer more than 80 scholarships combined for $270,000.

Prominent scholarships given out over the past few years are the Kevin and Stephanie Wilcox Advance Arkansas Endowed Scholarship and the Ken and Liz Allen Award in Design and Marlon and Meryati J. Blackwell Advance Arkansas Endowed Scholarship. Nearly $120,000 of scholarship money will support students who will be traveling abroad the upcoming academic year.

Fourth-year student Pedro Arredondo said that getting a scholarship would help greatly when he goes to Rome for study abroad credit in the Summer.

“Any financial help would be great,” Arredondo said. “Me and a lot of other architecture students are really hoping to get any financial support for this Summer trip. I’m excited to go to Rome, but still feel somewhat stressed about the money situation.”

The architecture program requires its students to study abroad during their time at the university. The Fay Jones requires the study abroad course for students to gain more experience and knowledge with looking at different structures and buildings from other parts of the world.

Many of these scholarships are funded by donations from alumni, friends and benefactors of the U of A. For some scholarship, all degree majors in the architecture program have the opportunity to get a scholarship with no primary focus.

Arredondo said that this study abroad trip will help him tremendously as he finishes up his collegiate career.

“This opportunity to go to Rome is very exciting,” Arredondo said. “I am excited to learn new things, furthering my knowledge as an architect and being around a different culture. Rome is very inspirational for finding new ideas and being more creative with your work.”
