FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – Fayetteville police officers are using donated stuffed animals to help comfort children during emergency situations. The department keeps a supply of new toys inside patrol vehicles so officers can offer them to children who may be frightened, overwhelmed, or unsure of what is happening during a call.
Officers say the toys can make a huge difference in how children experience stressful incidents. Emergencies such as domestic disturbances, vehicle collisions, or medical calls often unfold quickly, and young children may not fully understand the circumstances. According to the department, a stuffed animal can provide reassurance by giving children something familiar and calming to hold. The practice also helps officers build trust with children at a time when emotions are heightened and fear is common.
Fayetteville Police Sergeant Mauk explained that officers intentionally keep the stuffed animals accessible so they can use them as soon as they recognize a child who might benefit from one. He said these moments of connection are important because police uniforms, equipment, and patrol cars can be intimidating for children who are already experiencing distress. Mauk noted that providing a toy can shift a child’s focus away from the stressful environment and create an opportunity for communication.
“We show up in uniforms with equipment, and that can be scary for a child,” Sgt. Mauk said. “A stuffed animal is a simple way to reassure them that we’re there to help.”
The toys are used in a variety of situations. A child who has witnessed a domestic dispute may be frightened by what they have seen, while a child involved in a car crash may be overwhelmed by the noise, lights, and presence of emergency responders. Officers report that the stuffed animals help ease anxiety, and in many cases, noticeably improve the interaction between officers and children. Some children respond with immediate relief, while others gradually become more comfortable as the situation unfolds.
This initiative relies entirely on community donations. Residents, school groups, and local organizations frequently drop off new stuffed animals at the department, and officers say the supply moves quickly because the toys are used regularly. The department encourages ongoing donations to ensure the program can continue throughout the year.
Fayetteville police plan to maintain the use of stuffed animals as a supportive tool for children during emergency responses. Individuals interested in donating can bring new stuffed animals to the Fayetteville Police Department at any time.
