FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The University of Arkansas will celebrate first generation student week from Nov. 3-7, leading up to the national first generation student day on Nov. 8.
With about 25% of U of A student’s being first generation, the week spotlights the talent, resilience, and the contributions of students who are the first in their families to pursue a 4 year degree.
Hosted by the office of transition programs and initiatives, the annual celebration features a full slate of events designed to connect and recognize first generation students and their supporters.
the events include opportunities to talk to former first generation students, discover campus resources, and build relationships with mentors and advocates across the campus.
Many events include interactive elements and space limited sessions, so attendees are encouraged to plan ahead and sign up for the events they want to attend. Registration for individual events can be done through HogSync, while some of the bigger events require an rsvp to get in the door.
This years celebration also highlights the stories of U of A faculty and staff who were once first generation students themselves.
The office of transition programs and initiatives encourages all students, whether first generation or not, to take part in this weeks events as a way to learn more about the first generation student experience.
