FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – For children in low-income families, celebrating a birthday can be out of reach. One University of Arkansas college student is working to change that with her nonprofit, Birthdays by Madi.
Madi, who grew up baking with her family, started the organization after seeing firsthand how many children lacked basic celebrations while working with SOAR, a nonprofit that helps fill the gap between the school day and workday.
“Kids would tell me what they didn’t have, and it always surprised me,” said Madi. “I wanted to make sure every child could enjoy their special day, even if it was something as a birthday cake.”
The nonprofit provides birthday cakes at no cost to families. Since launching, Madi has baked dozens of cakes, creating moments of joy and a sense of belonging for local children.
SOAR connects families to the program. “Even something small, like a birthday cake, can bring magic. joy, and a sense of belonging to kids and families.” Ellery Bacon, HR manager, said.
Madi relies solely on donations to fund the cakes, which can be made directly on her website, birthdaysbymadi.org. She hopes to continue the nonprofit after graduation, spreading joy and celebrating children wherever she goes. Her mission highlights how a small act, like a birthday cake, can make a big difference in a child’s life. For Madi, it’s about ensuring that every child, no matter their circumstances, feels valued, seen, and celebrated.
