FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – Fayetteville man is dead after exchanging gunfire with police officers during a standoff at The Cliffs Apartment Complex on North Garnet Court on Sunday, Sept. 7.

According to Fayetteville police, officers were called to the complex around 11:54 a.m. after reports of a gunshot near apartment #8. When they arrived, shots were fired at them from inside apartment #1.

Police took cover, evacuated nearby apartments and called in additional agencies, including crisis negotiators and an armored rescue vehicle. Despite multiple attempts to make contact, the suspect continued to shoot at officers and the armored vehicle, police said.

Officers returned fire, and the suspect, later identified by Arkansas State Police in a news release as Brandon Poulter, 42, of Fayetteville, was shot. When officers entered the apartment, Poulter was found dead.

No officers or residents were injured. The apartment complex has since been secured, but a heavy police presence remained at the scene through the afternoon.

Poulter’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the cause of death.

The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division will lead the case and present findings to the Washington County Prosecutor, who will decide if officers acted within state law. Fayetteville police will also conduct an internal review of departmental procedures.

“This is still an active investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available,” FPD said in a statement on social media.

There is no ongoing threat to the public.
