FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — This morning on August 28, students and faculty woke up to alerts regarding potential flash flooding in North West Arkansas (NWA). Some Arkansas Transit busses had to re-route or even take a break due to the rain.
In an email sent out to the University, it announced that campus will remain open for the day. The email advising students, faculty and staff to be cautious when traveling. However, two buildings on campus are closed for the entire day.
“In-person classes in the Graduate Education and Chemistry buildings will not meet today. Faculty will have the option to conduct those classes remotely,” Amanda Hux, student body president, said.
Reports of water damage in both buildings early this morning led to the closure. Both buildings are not prone to flooding but leaks occurred due to the excessive amounts of water that campus received.
“Crews have been working all day to remove water, but we do plan to have both buildings re-open tomorrow for classes,” John Thomas, the director media relations and core communications, said.
Jenna Vela, a senior who lives off campus, woke up this morning feeling unsafe to go to campus.
“I usually take the UARK Transit to class, but with all of the hills and potential flood alerts I felt uneasy about hopping on the bus. This stress of getting to campus in this weather added more anxiety to my plate even after the events that took place earlier this week,” Jenna Vela said.
Another student had water seeping into their downstairs living area in their house. Shoshiana Vang and her roommates found the water and instantly started moving objects out of the area. Their carpet and anything else on the floor did get wet.
Some tips according to The National Weather service:
- TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.
- STAY OUT OF FLOODED AREAS.
- Keep in mind, water can rise quickly and contain debris like rocks or trees.
- Remain alert if you live in designated flood zones.
