University of Arkansas lifts lockdown after active shooter threat

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – At about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 25, the University of Arkansas sent a RazALERT to students, faculty and staff saying, “Avoid the area of Mullins Library due to an active shooter reported. Avoid. Deny. Defend.” University Police, Fayetteville Police, and many other local agencies responded to several locations around the universities campus after the initial report at Mullins Library.

Around 1:45 p.m. Fayetteville Police confirmed there were no confirmed gunshots, no confirmed injuries, no known suspects, and no known arrests. In a Facebook post the department stated, “We are following up on every call and investigating every lead. Safety of all students, faculty, and our community is our top priority.”

Fayetteville Public Schools announced schools in the area were put in “secure status” during the universities avoid, deny, defend protocol, meaning students, staff, and community members could not enter or leave buildings during that time.

At about 2:45 p.m., the university lifted the avoid, deny, defend protocols with this RazALERT saying, “After investigating multiple reports, police have not confirmed any active threats on campus at this time. Avoid, deny, defend protocols have been lifted at this time while police continue to patrol campus, but please be vigilant.”

Classes are cancelled for the remainder of today, but will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 26. Razorback Transit will continue its normal routes, and students are able to come and go if desired. Dining services are operating on Sunday hours and the UREC and Arkansas Union with close at 9:00 p.m. tonight. 

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will be available in the A6 area of the Arkansas Union until 5:00 p.m. today. CAPS also offers 24-hour emergency mental health services for students, faculty, and staff at (479) 575-5276.
