FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — The current Pope, Pope Francis, has been in the hospital since February 14, 2025 which has effected the Catholic Church even here in Arkansas.
The Pope is visible head of the Catholic church and Pope Francis is the 266th Pope in the Catholic church’s history.
The Pope is in charge of the Church and has full jurisdiction over the church when it comes to faith, morals, church discipline, and government.
Father Jason Sharbaugh of the St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish said that Pope Francis is in their thoughts and prayers.
“Mass has been offered for him since the begin of his health decline last week. We pray for his health, stability, and recovery.” said Father Jason Sharbaugh.
The Vatican government released a statement today, March 17th, that Pope Francis is still in the hospital but is in stable condition with slight improvements.
Pope Francis is 88 years old and even without being in the hospital many officials know that he nearing the end of his life.
“Yet may be near the end of his life – and all is grace bringing the community Body of Christ together. He is blessed in his life and if nearing his death will he rest in the Lord.” said Father Jason Sharbaugh.
In Pope Francis absence due to hospitalization, Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Paroline will help with Pope duties until he is in better health.
Sofie Novosel, a Parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish, said that mass is continuing as normal while Pope Francis’ health crisis is going on.
“I guess that we really just keep him our prayers! We continue mass as normal but he is definitely in our hearts.”
The next update from the Vatican on the Popes health will be on Wednesday. Tomorrow, the Vatican will update the press.
As for St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish, Pope Francis will never be far from their hearts and minds.
