FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — The University of Arkansas UREC HPER Building is currently under construction for renovation.

The renovation is a $24 million project that will add an additional 13,000 square feet to the fitness area, functional training areas, and windows in the fitness area.

The renovation will also include new locker rooms and showers.

UREC Marketing Coordinator Arden Elliott said that university students played a big role in deciding to undergo the renovation.

“It’s been a big need of the students, so we had a few student groups who were involved in the renovation process,” said Elliott, “they helped us determine what the students wanted.”

Elliott said before the renovation, there was limited room for students, and with the increasing annual student population, that was a big push to get it done.

“The overall feedback that we have gotten from the students is that they are super excited about this renovation and what is to come,” said Elliott.

With how eager the students are, Elliott said she is excited that it will be completed soon and she is ready for students to see the finished project.

University of Arkansas student Joey Leopold said that he thinks the UREC is one of the biggest parts of student life, so he hopes the renovation will be done as soon as possible.

“I think it is a really good place to go to have fun with your friends,” said Leopold, “it is on campus, it is close, and it is pretty nice to have.

Leopold said that there has been some obstacles that have made it inconvenient to visit the UREC HPER building recently.

“During busy hours, this gym get kind of packed out, and it is unfortunate because it makes it hard to work out and get gym equipment that you want to use,” said Elliott.

Due to the obstacles of the renovation, Elliott said he has been utilizing off campus gyms.

“I do think if it was fully completed, I would not be using other facilities, I would be using UREC.

Barring any set backs, the UREC renovation will be completed in the fall of 2025.
