Spring break safety

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — With classes starting a week earlier than usual at the University of Arkansas, students can hardly wait for spring break to arrive, symboling the half-way point of the semester.

The week of spring break was also pushed back a week in 2025, due to scheduling changes and to accommodate the academic calendar.

Spring break offers a chance to unwind, relax, and enjoy new adventures. Whether a beach trip, a road journey, or exploring a city, safety should remain a priority. Use these tips to ensure a fun, safe experience.

Research the destination. Understand the area’s safety, local laws, and travel advisories. Secure accommodations early and share the itinerary with a family member or friend. This step allows someone to track your whereabouts in case of emergencies.

Sun and fun often go hand in hand, but the sun can cause harm. Drink water regularly to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather or near pools. Apply sunscreen frequently to guard against UV damage. Hats or sunglasses offer additional protection from the sun’s rays.

Explore with caution. Keep valuables out of sight, whether on the beach or in hotel rooms. Use safes or small, secure bags that remain with you. In crowded places, remain vigilant about pickpockets.

Enjoy alcoholic drinks but stay mindful of limits. Don’t leave drinks unattended, and always watch out for friends. For safe transportation, designate a driver or rely on ride-sharing apps when out late.

Before heading out, learn the local emergency numbers. While 911 works in many places, it may differ in some areas. Keep a list of important contacts, including your accommodation and local authorities, in case you need help.

Travel with friends. Stick together when exploring new areas or out at night. Never leave anyone behind. Traveling with a group enhances safety and offers support in unfamiliar places.

“Whatever your plans are, I hope that will enjoy, be safe, relax, and look forward to returning and finishing the semester strong.” said University of Arkansas Chancellor, Charles Robinson.

Stay alert. Avoid walking alone at night or venturing into unfamiliar areas. Keep your phone charged and accessible. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, distance yourself from the situation. Spring break offers a chance to enjoy new experiences, but safety should remain a top priority.By planning ahead, staying hydrated, securing belongings, and sticking with a group, fun moments become safer and more memorable. Preparation ensures a fantastic time, free from concerns.
