University Housing works to keep students safe during winter weather

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — As the University of Arkansas campus experiences freezing temperatures and snowfall, University Housing is implementing measures to ensure the safety and comfort of its students during this winter season.

To combat the elements, University Housing staff are proactively pretreating sidewalks prior to any snowfall and prioritizing the clearance of high-traffic pathways, particularly those leading to dining halls. These snow removal efforts are closely coordinated with Facilities Management to maintain safe and accessible walkways across the campus.

Inside residence halls, temperatures are maintained between 68 and 72 degrees. However, Housing encourages students who experience heating issues to notify their Resident Assistant (RA) or submit a FIX IT request to ensure their room stays comfortable.

Housing also stocks emergency supplies in case of severe conditions and works closely with the University of Arkansas Police Department (UAPD) to ensure the campus remains accessible for all. Officials say these preparations help students navigate campus safely while avoiding unnecessary risks.

While Housing’s primary focus is on safety, staff also acknowledge that winter weather brings opportunities for students to enjoy the snow, emphasizing the balance between enjoyment and caution.

“We have to make sure the campus is safe, make sure the campus is a place where students can get around and have fun,” Christopher Spencer, housing assistant director for marketing said. “Sledding is obviously a fun thing people do, but keep it safe, and make sure the resources are there that they might need.”

Resident Assistants (RAs) play a key role in both safety and student engagement. RAs not only assist in shoveling and salting entryways to minimize ice buildup but also organize indoor activities to keep students entertained during snow days.

While Housing encourages students to take advantage of the winter weather, safety remains the top priority. University officials advise students to dress in layers, take breaks to warm up indoors, and remain mindful of slippery conditions, particularly for those who may not be accustomed to extreme cold.

University Housing recommends the following precautions for students during winter weather:

University Housing urges students to stay informed, promptly report any heating issues, and exercise caution on icy surfaces as winter conditions continue. More information regarding conditions and available resources can be found on Housing’s inclement weather webpage and social media accounts.
