FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – In preparation for the November elections, various political groups congregated at the University of Arkansas Union to urge students to register to vote Monday, Sept. 23.
The event was 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Student Union on the university campus.
Requirements for voter registration include being a citizen of Arkansas, being 18 years of age or older, and having no prior felony convictions.
Organizations like Arkansas Democrats showed up to encourage passing students to register to vote.
Students and members of the Arkansas Democrats exchanged conversations about the importance of being a registered voter in the state of Arkansas.
Cliff Scogin with Arkansas Democrats, sponsoring voter registration, explains that Arkansas has one of the lowest voter turnouts in the country.
“Arkansas has a relatively low voter turnout, actually one of the lowest in the country, so we’re trying to get people registered and get excited about voting,” said Scogin.
Luke Dumpert, a student at the U of A, explains why registering to vote and voting itself is important to him and other students.
“It’s one of the most American and patriotic things you can do for your country. It gives a voice to the voiceless,” said Dumpert.
The deadline for voter registration will be Monday, Oct. 7.
