Alcohol safety on spring break

By: Cecilia Stanford

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – Spring break is coming up next week for University of Arkansas students, and with this break there are precautions that can be taken to stay safe.

“Be smart, use common sense.” said UAPD Officer Ghesqiere. “Don’t overdrink if you’re going to make the decision to drink.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, binge drinking is classified as consuming five or more drinks for men, or four or more drinks for women. Overconsumption of alcohol can be associated with violence, sexual risk behaviors, alcohol poisoning, and injuries.

Ghesqiere said, “Try and be aware of how much alcohol you’re consuming.”

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says that symptoms of alcohol poisoning to look out for are mental confusion, difficulty remaining conscious, vomiting, seizures, trouble breathing, slow heart rate, clammy skin, dulled responses, and extremely low body temperature. In the event that you or someone you know are experiencing these symptoms, contact emergency services.
