FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) —One of the Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) at the University of Arkansas focuses solely on raising awareness and offering resources for mental health issues. This organization is called the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and it is dedicated to helping individuals who are facing mental health challenges. NAMI provides various resources, including programs, support groups, and educational materials. Their main goal is to ensure that people are well-informed about mental illness to combat the harmful stereotypes that have developed over time. Through their efforts, NAMI strives to create a more supportive and understanding community for everyone.

Madeline Bohlman, a senior at the University of Arkansas, has been actively involved with the Registered Student Organization (RSO) for nearly a year. Her journey with the RSO began as a result of her own personal challenges, which served as the purpose for her involvement.

“Last fall I joined the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), this organization’s mission deeply resonated with me.” Bohlman said. “My personal experiences with mental health challenges have motivated me to find meaningful ways to contribute to the well-being of others. I recognize the importance of using my voice to advocate for myself and to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with mental illness.”

Madeline shared how her own struggles initially sparked her interest in the RSO’s mission. As she continues her journey with the RSO, Madeline remains dedicated to making a positive impact within the U of A community. Through her involvement, she hopes to raise awareness, provide support, and advocate for the well-being of her peers.

Findings from the Healthy Minds Survey reveal a concerning trend among college students, with over 60%  now meeting the criteria for at least one mental health problem. This marks an increase of nearly 50% since 2013, highlighting the growing prevalence of mental health challenges within college students alone.

There is a need for more support and resources to address the mental well-being of students on campus, said Bohlman. As the prevalence of mental health issues continues to rise, NAMI is hoping to help prioritize initiatives for promoting mental well-being and providing accessible avenues for support.

To participate in a Registered Student Organization (RSO), students can access a comprehensive list of all RSOs on the university’s website, along with contact information, through HogSync. Eligibility to join requires enrollment in at least one course at the University of Arkansas additionally, holding a position within an RSO entails meeting higher requirements.
