FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) —The University of Arkansas frequently hosts career fairs, providing a platform for students to engage with various corporations and explore opportunities available to them. Students commonly believe that these career fairs are only to explore jobs available to them post-graduation, when in reality they serve as a way to secure internships as well. These events offer students a unique chance to network, interact with industry professionals, and gain insights into potential career paths. The University is dedicated to helping students grow professionally and connect with potential employers. One University of Arkansas professor believes these career fairs are an important part in shaping students’ future paths.
University of Arkansas Career Development Professional Angela Williams said, “On-campus career fairs provide an excellent platform for students to network with recruiters, industry professionals, and potential employers. Meeting face-to-face allows students to make a memorable impression, ask questions, and learn about various companies and job roles. Building these connections can lead to internships, job offers, and valuable insights into the job market.”
According to a survey by Indeed from 2022, about 82% of employers use virtual interviews, and 93% of employers said they plan to continue with virtual interviews. That being said, students who are getting in-person time with employers at these career fairs can really set themselves apart.
Talking with recruiters at career fairs helps students improve skills like communication and professionalism. Professor Williams said attending more job fairs boosts students’ confidence in presenting themselves well. This confidence can serve them well for job interviews and networking after college.
Career fairs are very common throughout the academic year, welcoming participation from students across all majors, not exclusively those enrolled in the business program. The University of Arkansas maintains a consistent schedule of hosting diverse career fairs directly on campus, offering students a wide variety of opportunities to engage and discover potential career paths. Those interested in volunteering can access the complete schedule of these events on the university’s calendar website, typically updated at the start of each month. Looking ahead, the university has a series of upcoming career fairs on the schedule from now to early April, catering to a variety of interests such as business, STEM, education, and summer camp employment prospects.
It is best that students show up dressed in business casual clothing with printed resumes to share with the interviewers. If you need assistance in either of these areas, The CORD on campus has an army of volunteers ready to assist you in crafting a resume or practicing your interview skills. And for clothing needs, the career closet in Willard J. Walker hall offers gently used professional clothing free of cost.
