FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The University of Arkansas celebrated International Women’s Day last Friday, March 8, with a series of events aimed at honoring the contributions of women from diverse backgrounds. The International Students and Scholars planned various events intended to promote empowerment and inclusivity.

Graduate Assistant for the International Culture Team Gemma Gomez said the purpose of these events was to show gratitude for what women have accomplished.

“We celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women all around the world,” Gomez said.  “We want to honor the incredible women who paved the way for progress and continue to inspire us every day! Having such amazing women on our campus and community inspired us to hold these events.”

One of the highlights of the day-long celebration included the Women of the World Portrait Gallery and Appreciation Note Writing event. It took place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Union International Connections Lounge, also known as the Flag Room.

The event featured a photoshoot of over 30 international women on campus with their respective biographies. Attendees also had the opportunity to write thank you notes or words of encouragement to the women in their lives.

Additionally, the Fulbright College Inclusive Excellence hosted the Purple Ribbon and Photobooth event in the Union Food Court. Volunteers set up a table where participants could pick up International Women’s Day purple ribbons and take pictures at a photo booth. Attendees were encouraged to strike the #InspireInclusion pose. Candy was also available to sweeten the experience.

Throughout the day, women on campus received flowers to celebrate International Women’s Day, a common tradition that is observed worldwide. Tables hosted by university Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) handed out the flowers to women with the Fayetteville Public Library having a featured book display on women.

Gomez said she acknowledges the importance of diversity and inclusivity when celebrating women’s accomplishments.

“One of our campus’s most valuable assets is the diversity it has,” Gomez said. “With events like this, we provide a space for women of various backgrounds to share about their culture. American students, international students, scholars, and our community are all invited to share and learn from others.”

With diversity playing an important role in celebrating International Women’s Day, ISS also hosted the International Women’s Day Program and Fashion Show in the Union International Connections Lounge Friday evening. Attendees were able to learn about women’s suffrage, watch artistic performances, and see an international fashion show featuring traditional attire from over 10 countries.

Gomez said the main goals of this year’s events were to celebrate and recognize women who strive to make positive changes in the world, country, and community. Through presentations and performances, organizers hoped to support and inspire women in various aspects of their lives.

Gomez said one key takeaway that she hoped attendees left the day’s events with was the power of diversity.

“We are all different and that is beautiful. Together, we can create a positive change and empower future generations of women” Gomez said.
