Local marathon runs for a bigger cause against cancer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The Iron Pig hosted a 5K race and a duathlon to raise awareness for cancer in Fayetteville at Drake Field. This event also raised money for donations toward cancer research and support to those who are battling. Runners from all ages were given the chance to compete.

The event included a “Fun Run” for children of all ages and a race for people over 16. Family members were able to donate and cheer on their relatives.

One University of Arkansas student, Will Kolassa, said that this event was not only beneficial to him as an avid runner, but to also compete for a good cause.

“I like to run, love to do it,” Kolassa said. “Whenever there is an opportunity that pops up, especially for a cause or anything like that, I try to join as many of them as I can.”

Different types of cancers vary from lung, breast, skin and prostate. Studies are still being done to find out what can help prevent these types of cancers.

According to the American Cancer Society, almost two million cases of cancer are reported each year. Kolassa said he has seen cancer effect his family and felt a close connection with the event.

“Cancer has played a role in a lot of my family member’s lives,” Kolassa said. “My aunt had cancer. But she beat it, thank goodness. But my grandpa actually passed away from cancer. So, it’s something that I’ve had experiences with.”

Not only was this an event to raise awareness, but a way for people who had defeated their battle with cancer a way to get out. Running has been shown to help prevent the recurrence of cancer and other health benefits.

With a good bit of money being raised to help the cause, Kolassa said he is glad to be a part of something bigger than just winning.

“Anything that has to do with raising awareness or money for cancer research or anything like that, I think it’s a great thing,” Kolassa said.

Iron Pig is looking to do more events in the summer. Its next event is June 17th, and will hold a duathlon in support of local firefighters.
