FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The University of Arkansas hosts a bi-annual Campus Lighting Tour where volunteers walk in groups around campus identifying and reporting areas that need improved lighting.
The Resident’s Interhall Congress, also known as RIC, will host the tour on Thursday, March 9. This tour will last from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m..
RIC Director of Programs, Philip Nunez, said the purpose of the Campus Lighting Tour is to promote safety around campus.
“RIC serves the purpose of serving the on-campus students. With on-campus students using the campus, obviously at nighttime more than any other student, it was clear that this would be a good fit for a program and organization like us,” Nunez said.
This year’s theme is glow in the dark. The RIC will have a bunch of glow items that will be handed out for the volunteers to walk around campus with.
The volunteers will meet in Kimpel Hall 102 to be given a presentation and their routes for the night.
Nunez said they do a short presentation, talk about safety on campus, the importance of the campus lighting tour, and talk about the different routes they will split into.
“If there’s a spot they don’t feel safe, then that’s a sure sign that there definitely needs to be some more lights. If there’s a light post with no lights in it, then they do the same thing and they report that,” said Nunez
Nunez said each volunteer is given a QR code to report each problem. The form is then sent to Facilities Management on campus.
Volunteers can bring their friends or show up solo. There will be hot chocolate and t-shirts handed out at the event.
