FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – Earlier this semester, Dr. Lia Uribe was named the new chair of the Department of Music. Since Uribe joined the University of Arkansas, she has spent time as an assistant professor, director of undergraduate studies, and associate chair.
Uribe is now the second woman to take the position and the first person of Latin heritage to head the department.
“I know Dr. Uribe to be an empathetic and visionary leader who strives to be collaborative and inclusive in her decision-making,” said Kathryn Sloan, interim dean of Fulbright College.
Uribe will be replacing Ronda Mains, who recently retired from the position. “Dr. Lia Uribe has enormous support from her peers,” said Sloan.
Uribe’s music career has been spent as an international bassoonist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Her research is focused on underrepresented Latin-American music and composers. In 2019, Uribe founded RefleXions Music Series, a program that celebrates music and allows musicians to learn and grow. She also wants to continue to focus on building her partnerships and relationships in the future.
“Leading the Department of Music is the next step in my service to the U of A,” said Uribe. She went on to praise the rest of the department and the support of her students and faculty.
