FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The University of Arkansas Center for Arkansas Farms and Food Bank is returning to host events in March. The events will occur following the beginning of the 2023 Farm School Apprenticeship programs.
The Farm School and Apprenticeship program is a hands-on learning program. “It is a second career after retirement or a passion ready to be pursued,” said Heather Friedrich, program manager for the center for Arkansas farms and food.
The 2023 Farm School class consists of 10 people, and the apprenticeship program started in 2020 is comprised of four individuals. Most people who participate in these programs are either recently out of college or over 45.
“Both programs are a huge commitment,” said Friedrich. While the Farm School students usually will have a part-time job, the apprentices have their on-farm work as their primary focus.
Education and Networking will kick off the new programs. It will take place on zoom on March 2nd. Speakers will include Poppy Davis, with the University of Arkansas school of law, and Ashley Appel, owner of Appel Farms.
Other events include a Farm Opportunities Mixer, a winter maintenance class, and more. Farm tours open to the public are also planned for this summer.
