By: Autumn Klein and Ginny Dunn

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – Arkansas midterm elections are quickly approaching, and Arkansas voters have to make a momentous decision: who will be their 47th governor?

Before heading to the polls, here is some important information regarding the three leading candidates.

Chris Jones (D)

Democrat Chris Jones is a graduate of MIT, where he earned a Ph.D. in urban planning following his educational journey at Morehouse College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in physics and math.

Democrat Jones is known for his campaign promise: PB&J. “PBJ” stands for preschool, broadband, jobs, and is a plan Jones says he will use to prioritize preschool, increase statewide broadband and support economic development through creating more high-wage jobs if he is elected.

If elected, Chris Jones would be the first Black man to become Arkansas governor.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R)

Republican Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University. Sanders is known for being the daughter of former Governor Mike Huckabee and; therefore, has been a political figure throughout her entire career. She also served time as press secretary for former President Donald Trump.

As Roe v. Wade has been a major talking point in political races, Sanders has made the promise to keep Arkansas “one of the most pro-life states in the nation.” While she has not provided a full agenda, Sanders has pledged to fight President Joe Biden’s administration policies.

If elected, Sarah Huckabee Sanders would be the first women elected as Arkansas governor.

Ricky Harrington Jr. (L)

Libertarian Ricky Harrington Jr. is a graduate of Harding University. While attending college, he went on a two-year mission trip in China, where he worked as a university teacher and hospital consultant.

Harrington Jr. ran against Senator Tom Cotton in 2020, receiving 33.5% of the vote.

In his campaign, Harrington Jr. addresses criminal justice reform, stating the current system does not work for the people of Arkansas. He says he will focus on three principles: fairness, rehabilitation and prevention.
