WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ark. (UATV) – An off-duty police officer from Oklahoma was arrested Friday, Sept. 23 after shooting a man in Washington County.
Suspect Travis Adams, 33, is an Adair county Oklahoma deputy who shot the victim Justin Hellyer. Adams was released from the Washington County Detention Center on Saturday, Sept. 24 on a $50,000 bond.
Officials say the shooting happened on Pleasant Hill Road and Hellyer had two gunshot wounds in the abdomen when deputies arrived.
According to the investigation, Hellyer drove into Adam’s driveway, and refused to leave despite Adam’s requests. Adams then began firing shots towards the trees while Hellyer rolled down his window and began to argue.
Officials say Hellyer stood up and got in Adams’s face while Adams pushed him away with his left hand, pointing the pistol downwards.
According to officials, the two continued arguing and Adam’s then fired his gun twice in Hellyer’s lower abdomen. Hellyer was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center, where he has faced multiple surgeries and his conditions remain unknown.
Adams is currently facing first degree battery charges and will appear in court Monday, Sept. 26 for his first hearing.
