FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV)- The FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine, Bivalent is now available at Pat Walker Health Center.

Pat Walker has approximately 600 hundred doses available of the Pfizer-BioNtech Bivalent vaccine. Bivalent is currently only available to students, faculty and staff and appointments are required. The vaccine is free at Pat Walker besides a $30 administrative fee, which most insurances cover.

The Pfizer-BioNtech Bivalent vaccine was approved by the FDA at the end of August. According to the FDA, the Bivalent vaccines contain two mRNA components of the SARS-CoV-2 virus: one belonging to the original strain of the virus and the other one is in common between the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages of the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. These two components provide broad protection against the original strain of COVID-19 as well as the Omicron strain.

According to the FDA, Bivalent is authorized as a single booster dose in individuals 12 and over administered at least two months after completion of any primary authorized vaccination or recent booster for COVID-19.
