FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The University of Arkansas celebrated International Women’s Day on Tuesday.
The holiday recognizes and honors women’s social, cultural, economic, and political achievements across the globe. This day also raises awareness of women’s rights issues and gender gaps.
The University invited the community to take part in the day’s significance by hosting scheduled events throughout the day.
To begin the day, the Women of the World photo gallery opened to the public. This gallery displays portraits of international and US women at the U of A and will remain available for viewing between March 8-30 on the fourth floor of the Union.
During the afternoon, event staff freely handed out fresh flowers to women in front of the Union Food Court. A “Thank You Note Booth” remained available for anyone who wanted to write a note to an important woman in their life, specifically U of A faculty and fellow students.
The highlighted event took place from 4-6pm in the Union Ballroom, and featured keynote speakers, a global fashion show, and multiple performances.
Assistant Director for International Students, Cynthia Smith, says the events were based upon what international women at the U of A were interested in hosting.
“It’s important to know that there are different ways that women celebrate International Women’s Day around the world, and this is the U of A way.”
