CENTERTON, Ark. (UATV-Beau Russell) — The family owned “Wicked Bean” coffee shop is raising money for a friends’ family living in Ukraine.

Co-owners Katherine and Randy Smith had the idea to start the fundraiser because of their friend and frequent customer Sergei whose family lives in Ukraine.

“We have some very dear friends from Ukraine who are also our best customers,” Katherine said.

She said they went back and forth on different ideas, trying to find the best way to support Sergei and his family.

“It just dawned on us, why don’t we just adopt his family,” Smith said.

Sergei’s family was “completely blown away” and said, “yes,” grateful to accept the financial support of the Smiths.

Randy Smith said the family recently left Kyiv, and has made it to a safer location. Katherine Smith added that she is so appreciative of everyone who has helped raise funds so far.

Right now, more than 1.7 million Ukrainians have fled the country because of the Russian invasion, according to the United Nations.
Many Ukrainians are heading to countries west of Ukraine, including Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Moldova.
