FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The New Student and Family Programs under The Division of Student Affairs hosted a National First-Generation Student Day event Monday.

This celebration took place in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge in efforts for first-generation students, faculty, or staff to receive the recognition they deserve. The event not only celebrated the students and faculty successes, but showcased resources that aim to help first-generation college students.

“This community needs all the support they can get,” Emily Cook assistant director of New Student and Family Programs said. “A lot of them come into college not knowing what they are getting into, and that is okay. That is what our office is here to do, is to support these students.”

Stickers and t-shirts were passed out for first-generation students or graduates that attended. These certain items helped emphasize the population of all the first generations at the University of Arkansas.

Students or faculty that attended had the opportunity to partake in a photobooth session or an interactive story wall. The story wall included personal experiences as a first-generation student, and the importance to them.
