U of A student organization helps refugees in NWA

Fayetteville, Ark. (UATV) — Students with Refugees is a student-led organization at the U of A that helps immigrants get settled in the Northwest Arkansas area.

The group works with CanopyNWA to find housing and supplies for refugees. Volunteers are able to gain hands-on experience by setting up furniture and moving families into apartments.

“Students can get involved literally every week, sometimes multiple (times) a week,” says Julianna Kantner, vice president of Students with Refugees. “This year alone we’ve already gotten over 200 hours registered and we probably have volunteered a lot more than that. So, it’s really cool to see just how much students are really willing to give to Canopy.”

Kantner also says that the organization is dependent on members of the community to help find and provide housing for families. Once the find the housing, Students with Refugees can give volunteers an opportunity to do life-changing work.

Students looking to get involved can visit the Students with Refugees Instagram and Facebook pages.
