FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – A student at the University of Arkansas was struck by a car while crossing the cross-walk near the Adohi dorm, according to University of Arkansas Police.

Fernanda Alcantara, a student at the university, said she was traveling on an automated scooter around 2:30 p.m. Sept. 30. to get to campus for the top 20 ceremony for homecoming.

“From the second she hit me, it was all just kind of a blur,” said Alcantara.

After evaluation at the hospital, Alcantara said she had a broken nose, oral surgery, a fracture on her upper jaw, a concussion, extreme soreness, and bruising.

“I got very lucky in that sense,” said Alcantara.

The universities policy regarding cross-walks and pedestrians states that students using scooters should yield to vehicle traffic at crosswalks and intersections. It also states that the individual must get off the scooter, walk it across the cross-walk, and obey applicable traffic control devices.

According to UAPD, another student was struck on campus three hours later on Maple St. on the cross-walk at the Pi Phi gates.
