University of Arkansas student starts ice cream business to combat child hunger

FARMINGTON, Ark. (UATV) – Simple + Sweet Creamery donates over half of their profits to fighting child hunger in Northwest Arkansas.

University of Arkansas student Coleman Warren started the ice cream company in February and March of 2020, with an official opening last October.

“We’ve been operating for about six months now, and we’ve sold nearly 2,000 pints,” said Simple + Sweet co-founder Coleman Warren. “we’ve also donated over 13,000 meals.”

The creamery focuses on delivering small batch artisanal ice cream right to their customers.

“I oversaw putting that ice cream into the pint, sealing it up. It’s all hand-made and that completely changes the quality of your experience,” said Warren.

The company donates as much of their proceeds to charity as possible, with the rest of the revenue going to expand the business and feed more children in the future.

“As much as possible is going to support the Northwest Arkansas food bank to help them get more meals out to the community,” said Warren. “So that’s our main mission: to provide love, comfort, but most importantly generosity.”

The pandemic forced Warren’s business to an online delivery service, but Warren said this has helped jump-start the company.

The creamery operates in a previously unused kitchen at Farmington School District. Coleman said the partnership with Farmington schools made the ice cream operation possible.

“I had this kind of off the wall idea,” said Warren. “I needed a place to make ice cream, I knew they had an unused facility.”

Warren said he hopes to open a food trailer for Simple + Sweet this summer.
