FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — The Fayetteville Public Schools district sits right on outside the campus of the University of Arkansas, and both institutions have begun celebrating a 150th anniversary in the midst of a pandemic.
Fayetteville Public Schools’ Superintendent Dr. John L Colbert serves as a bridge between the two storied institutions.
Colbert graduate three times from the U of A on his journey to becoming Superintendent of Fayetteville Public Schools. Now in his third year with the district, he said he’s always appreciated the connection between the two.
“We still have that same type of partnership going on almost 150 years later, and I really appreciate the partnership we have with the University being right in our backyard,” Colbert said.
In his 43 year career with the district, Colbert said he has always appreciated the town both institutions call home.
“Fayetteville has always been very progressive in their thinking about doing things the right way,” Colbert said. “So, I’m very, very proud of Fayetteville Public Schools.”
Also founded in 1871, the University of Arkansas has begun celebrations for its 150th anniversary. In addition to a celebration that took place a few weeks ago, the University has set up a website that will recognize the rich history of the school.
A goal for Fayetteville Public Schools’ celebration is to recognize the rich history of the district.
“In 1871, this was the first African American school in Fayetteville and in Northwest Arkansas, and then Northwest Arkansas has the first Black Superintendent, John L Colbert,” Colbert said.
To help celebrate the anniversary, the school district will start a website which will document their history in a timeline format. The district will also display student-made artwork, and yard signs have been made available for families wanting to show their support for the district.
Colbert said being able to share the anniversary between the two institutions makes the experience that much better.
“It’s kind of exciting that we can celebrate 150 years together,” Colbert said. “It’s awesome.”
