U of A Division of Student Affairs releases guidance on power outages due to inclement weather

By: Tristan Hill

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) — University of Arkansas Provost Charles Robinson emailed students Tuesday afternoon regarding action the U of A is taking amid rolling blackouts during a week that, for many, consists of midterms.

“Faculty have been asked to be sensitive to the challenges these outages can pose to those of you studying remotely and be flexible in making appropriate accommodations if an outage causes a student to miss a test or class,” Robinson said.

Students are encouraged to contact their professor or department chair once they are able if issues due to power outages arise.

Robinson clarified policy regarding hybrid and virtual class attendance when when face-to-face classes are cancelled, as well.

“While campus is closed, the continuation of hybrid and remote classes is at the discretion of instructors, so please stay in communication with your instructors regarding any changes to scheduled classes,” he said.

The Provost also offered tips to stay safe in extreme temperatures. Those tips include:

  • Stay indoors if you can.
  • If you do need to get out, dress in multiple layers to stay warm.
  • Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. At extreme temperatures, frostbite can occur in minutes.
  • Leave your faucets dripping and keep under-sink cabinet doors open to reduce the risk of water pipes freezing.
  • The Arkansas Union, Tech Spot Lab in the union, and some on-campus dining facilities are available during specific hours; refer to their websites or social media accounts for details.  @ArkansasUnion on Instagram and Twitter; @FoodontheHillAR on Twitter and @foodonthehill_ar on Instagram.

At the time of the email, face-to-face classes for Wednesday, February 17 have not been cancelled.
