FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UATV) – The United Nations ratified a treaty outlawing the use, distribution, and development of nuclear weapons Friday. The United States and other world superpowers did not sign this treaty.

“If nuclear weapons are now illegal, the U.S. and other nation states that develop them are international outlaws” said Jeremy Kuzmarov, author and assistant history Professor at Southern Nazarene University, “The universities are participating in activity that is actually illegal under international law.”

The University of Arkansas, along with 49 other academic institutions, have collaboration agreements with the tech conglomerate Honeywell. This agreement supports universities that have programs for developing and innovating defense technology. Which includes development projects for nuclear weapon systems.

This prompted a protest outside the student union where two hosts spoke critically of the United States and their failure to join the other 50 countries that signed the treaty.
