Mental Health and Coronavirus

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Amid the current pandemic, prioritizing mental health is essential.

Students can access mental health resources virtually through Pat Walker Health Center. CAPS outreach coordinator Gonzalo Camp said staying connected is vital during this time.

“We have a virtual COVID support group, and you don’t need to have tested positive,” Camp said. “ It is for the campus community to discuss their current situation and how they are feeling.”

Camp  stressed the importance of implementing enjoyable activities in daily routine. Getting outside, if possible, or partaking in a hobby from home.

U of A student Hannah Whitworth quarantined after possibly being exposed to the virus. Whitworth said communicating was an essential element for her during quarantine.

“Trying to communicate with people even though I can’t see them, but not cutting myself off emotionally from anyone,” Whitworth said.

Whitworth suggested those in quarantine should try changing their environment.

“Sitting outside or opening a window, just doing anything to change your environment so you don’t feel stuck,” Whitworth said.

Being aware of personal feelings around COVID-19 is important for mental health. Relaxing and taking a breath is helpful during this time, Camp said.

“Give yourself permission to feel your feelings,” Camp said.
