FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – As most people know, Super Tuesday happened about a week ago, and Arkansas was one of the many states that participated in it. NPR.org tells us that 40.5% of all Arkansans who voted, voted for Joe Biden. That percent equates to over ninety-two thousand people. However, that number may seem small when compared to the Republican Party. Donald Trump received 97% of the votes, equating to more than twenty-three thousand people.
In Arkansas, every County but one had Biden as the majority vote; Washington County was the exception.
“Really, the fact that Washington County was the only county to see Democratic voters prefer Sanders over Biden is not surprising. Sanders constituents, nationwide, are college students and/or people under 30 … that’s a population disproportionately concentrated in the county that serves as home to our state’s flagship college campus,” said Janine Parry, Political Science Professor at the University of Arkansas.
Voting in elections like the primaries is important. Those who voice their opinions are those who are heard. “Decades of research tells us what regular voters already know: that politicians are accountable to the people who cast ballots: that means wealthier, older people have tremendous influence in what services get funded with the tax dollars everyone pays, and what doesn’t,” said Parry.
General Elections will be held on Tuesday, December third.
