Razorback Weekend Recap

Last weekend, the Arkansas baseball team had plenty of mishaps, but ultimately came out on top. The Omahogs won two of the three games against South Alabama.

Arkansas lost the first game Friday, 13-5. Game one consisted of Razorback pitchers being completely disassembled as the Jaguars took a 13-6 win. Sophomore left-hander Patrick Wicklander started for the Hogs instead of usual sophomore ace Connor Noland, who sustained a mild oblique strain on the left side of his body during his start against the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday. Arkansas left 13 runners on the base ultimately causing the defeat.

Game two the Razorbacks rallied up and struck back winning 15-2. All three South Alabama pitchers ended up conceding five runs apiece. This was also the Razorbacks’ sixth game in a row where they would allow a team to  score first. This is also the Razorbacks’ first come back win not leading in the first.

The last game of the series came down to the wire. This is the first time that an Arkansas player hit a walk-off home run since 2011, when James McCann did so against the LSU Tigers.

The Diamond Hogs are 9-5 this season. Head coach Dave Van Horn is now two wins away from his 700th career win as head hog, and 17 away from his 1,300th win overall as a collegiate head coach. The Hogs take on the Grand Canyon Antelopes in a two-game series tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., and Wednesday at 3 p.m., before opening up SEC weekend against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The Arkansas men’s basketball team squared off against the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station last Saturday in the team’s regular season finale. The Hogs were not able to capitalize as the Aggies went on to win, 77-69. Junior guard Mason Jones led the Hogs with 30 points, two rebounds and assist, while sophomore guard Isaiah Joe contributed with 22 points and grabbed four rebounds in the 37 minutes he played.

Texas A&M’s  junior guard Wendell Mitchell led the Aggies with 25 points, five rebounds and three assists. Arkansas finished the regular season with a record of 19-12 and an SEC record of 7-11. With this loss, the Hogs will settle as the number 11 seed in the SEC tournament. The Hogs play the 14th-seeded Vanderbilt Commodores in the first round on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m.
