FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Every October, people around the world celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, hoping to increase attention and support for the awareness.
After one student found out her mom developed the disease, she has continued to advocate for other women to get themselves checked.
“It was immediately a really tough transition,” Sophomore Sarah Rulli said. “Not only for college, but to go through recruitment.”
Rulli found out about her mother’s illness a few weeks before she began classes here at the University of Arkansas. However, she decided not to let her mother’s illness become a barrier.
She became a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, who’s philanthropy happens to be Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.
“To come into a place where a chapter was dedicated to just the very thing I was struggling with,” Rulli said. “It seemed too good to be true.”
Rulli worked alongside Zeta Tau Alpha President Madison Anderson this summer during recruitment. Anderson, says she’s pleased with what the sorority has done over the past year.
“This past semester we were able to raise $40,000 and $70,000 for the entire year,” said Anderson. “We’ve never been able to do that before, and we hope to reach $100,000 by May.”
Rulli alongside Zeta Tau Alpha members are currently celebrating their ‘Think Pink Week’ and will continue to host more events to bring Awareness to Breast Cancer.
