Public Intoxication Rules for Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas defines public intoxication as “a visible intoxication, such as being unable to walk unassisted, unable to speak coherently.” The university has set strict guidelines on alcohol and public intoxication in order to keep its students safe.

University of Arkansas students charged with public intoxication have decreased since Spring 2015. Last semester, 84 students obtained public intox charges. When a student is charged, he or she could face fines from $100 – $500 and potentially lose driving privileges for a first time offense.

In the 2019 Campus Climate Survey, 28% of participants said they drink once or twice a week, and 26% said they typically consume two alcoholic drinks while drinking. According to the University Housing Handbook, public intoxication is prohibited on campus, including in residential halls if the resident is underage. If the resident is 21 or older they may drink alcohol in their room as long as the door is closed.
