FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.–Campus events can yield a large amount of trash, but one University office gives students a chance to have fun while generating zero waste. At least that has been the goal since the University of Arkansas Office of Sustainability established Zero Waste Events in 2014. The first Zero Waste Event to be hosted by the University was Razorbash. An event that included 200 vendors diverted over 70 percent of waste created by the event from ending up in a landfill. The Office of Sustainability offers bins for collecting waste for those interested in attempting a Zero Waste Event.
“I think the Office for Sustainability can work with other RSO’s to make this program more accessible in the future,” said Sophie Hill, the Coordinator for the Zero Waste program at the University of Arkansas.
The ultimate goal of the Office of Sustainability is to make the UofA a waste-free campus by 2040, said Hill.
