Staying Safe During your Uber Ride

By Haley Berley

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — After the death of a South Carolina student, both riders and drivers are taking extra precautions in order to make it to their destination safely.

The 21-year-old called an Uber ride during the early Saturday morning and was waiting for the ride to come, police said. The student was then seen on video getting into the car — a black four-door Chevy Impala — “thinking it was an Uber,” police said.

The impact of the death has reached campuses around the nation. Calling on students to double, even triple-check their Uber’s information before getting into the car.

Sergeant Tony Murphy of the Fayetteville Police Department says that your safety is not something to be taken lightly. “In this day-in-age, a lot of people are scared to hurt people’s feelings. There’s a time and a place when you need to hurt people’s feelings, and when your safety is involved, say something.”

Uber has released details about how to know exactly who, in what car, is picking you up in order to keep safety a top priority.
