FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Spring begins in a couple weeks, but those living in Northwest Arkansas may feel that it’s further off.
This weekend, Fayetteville and the surrounding areas, saw a mix of snow and ice cover the region this weekend.
It’s rather uncommon to see snow in Northwest Arkansas in March. The last time it snowed significantly in the month was in 2015, when it snowed 2.6 inches.
Out of the last 10 years, it has only snowed in March four times, not including this past weekend.
There was enough snow on the roads Monday morning to cause hazardous road conditions which closed many local schools, but not the University of Arkansas.
The university decided to open the campus at 10 a.m. after a delayed start to the day.
Julie Hime, a sophomore psychology student, was upset in the university’s decision to remain open.
“I was disappointed that the university didn’t close because I have to commute from Elkins,” Hime said. “I have had a wreck on ice before and I wasn’t willing to risk it.”
The University of Arkansas’ policy on inclement weather expresses that it practices wariness when it comes to poor weather conditions.
“The University recognizes, however, the need to exercise caution for the welfare of the University community, including all faculty, students and staff,” states the policy.
