FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Three cases of the mumps have been confirmed as well as one suspected case at the University of Arkansas. All cases were revealed over the past month.
Students and Faculty are urged to stay up to date on their Mumps Measles Rubella (MMR) vaccine and to seek medical care if experiencing symptoms. The Pat Walker Health Center said, “Unvaccinated people are nine times more likely to get mumps than people with two doses of MMR vaccine.”
Mumps is a contagious virus that is preventable by vaccine. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and swollen salivary glands.
The mumps can be spread through the saliva of an infected person. It is common for it to be spread through coughing, sneezing, or sharing food or drinks with people.
