National Cat Day Celebrates Furry Frenemies

By Kellie Audrain

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—Today is the day to celebrate one of the many furry friends humans have made over the history of time.

National Cat Day was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige, founder of National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Pet Day.

The holiday is celebrated by shelters across the country with adoption celebrations and fairs.

Fayetteville Animal Services currently has fourteen cats in their shelter, with adoption fees sponsored for three of them according to their Facebook.

“Adoption fees are usually $20, and include booster shots, microchipping, and spay and neutering,” said Cathleen Stafford of Fayetteville Animal Services. “Sometimes adoption fees are sponsored, which happens when someone makes donations to the shelter to cover the fees of certain animals.”

If adopting a cat is out of the question due to varying reasons, readers can also visit the Purr Cat Cafe near Baum Stadium to spend time with cats while studying or hanging out with friends.

All the cats at Purr are available to be adopted through local shelters.

“I love cats and I’m so happy it’s National Cat Day. I don’t have a cat and if I wasn’t working and if I had money, I would go to the cat cafe,” said junior Halie Brown.
