Halloween Safety Top Priority of Local Police

By Kellie Audrain

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – A local police department has put out tips to keep trick-or-treating ghosts and ghouls safe this Halloween.

The Springdale Police Department posted a list of safety tips on Twitter on Oct. 26. The list has four main focuses: walk safely, trick-or-treat with an adult, keep costumes safe, and drive extra safely.

Springdale PD advises that walking safely includes walking on sidewalks and putting phones away to stay alert. Car safety is also involved with walking safety. Parents and children should use cross walks, look both ways before crossing the street, and never dart between parked cars.

Staying safe while trick-or-treating involves staying in groups and avoiding dark houses. Parents should also double-check candy before giving their kids the O.K. to fall into a sugar coma.

Parents can also make costumes safe by attaching reflective tape or glow sticks to their spider or pirate. Police also suggest making sure all costumes are the correct sizes to keep children from tripping and falling.

Captain Derek Hudson said that drivers should also stay aware on Oct. 31.

“People coming home from work need to be careful, especially on side streets and in neighborhoods,” Captain Hudson said.

Drivers should also remember their headlights and blinkers, even when it isn’t one of the spookiest nights of the year.
