FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — One U-of-A student qualifies to compete in an international competition next month.
University of Arkansas senior Scott Lirgg has been selected to represent the United States at the 2018 Obstacle Course Racing World Championships, October 19th in London, England. Over 500 professional athletes from 67 different countries will compete for the prestigious title of World OCR Champion.
Lirgg earned a spot on Team USA during a qualifying event this past summer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Obstacle Course Racing as Lirgg describes it as the new American Ninja Warrior.
“So you run anywhere from 2-15 miles depending on the race and then you have these obstacles that you have to complete during the course.”
Some of the obstacles Lirgg will face are climbing walls, cargo nets and any type of grip strength objects.
As a biochemistry, pre-med and psychology major balancing training, extracurriculars and school can be grueling but Lirgg manages to find the right balance in order to be successful.
“Having a good background of diverse activities coming into college made it pretty simple to align my schedule and already have pre-set out times that I know I can work out then or I can run at that specific time.”
Lirgg trains up to 12 hours per week while handling an 18 credit hour class schedule. He is looking forward to the World Championships and even though he is self-trained, he is excited to take on the course alongside some of the best athletes in the world.
