By Mazie Vincent FAYETTEVILLE Ark. – Many questions were expressed to the U of A – knowledgeable about the newly expanded concealed carry laws.
The new law states that individuals with concealed handgun permits can bring their guns on campus if they’ve completed an Arkansas State Police enhanced certification-training course.
Although the law went into effect in September 2017, State Police finalized the course and have began training instructors.
Students, faculty and members of the community conveyed their uncertainties, ranging from how to obtain the enhanced license, to finding ways to get rid of the law.
“I wanted to know more going into it because I am an Arkansas resident and I just want to know what is happening around here and what the requirements are for it,” said Veronica Garcia, a U of A student.
Throughout the forum, the panel suggested that anyone with concerns should read the bill and guidelines in full to have a better understanding.
“We have great concerns over this bill we do not feel that guns belong on college campuses where this is alcohol, drugs and we just do not feel that it is protecting the public,” said Katherine Snyder, a gun law advocate.
According to State police, enhanced training will consist of eight hours of instruction, five to six hours of classroom training plus up to two hours of firing range qualification.
Keep in mind – for those who have an out of state concealed carry licenses, will not be able to participate in the enhanced training.
An Arkansas license is required.
