Complaints about the Harmon Parking Garage Continue to Grow

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – It’s hard to find a good place to park on campus, especially one that isn’t always crowded.

The Harmon Avenue Parking Garage is a popular spot for students as well as faculty and staff.

However, the price of permits, traffic and reliability of finding a spot are the top complaints amongst drivers.

David Wilson, Director of Communications for Transit and Parking, said there are multiple reasons behind the congestion.

“If traffic moves better outside, you’re going to be able to exit much easier on the inside,” said Wilson.

Busy, unmonitored crosswalks and vehicles stopping to pick people up are some of the causes Wilson spoke about. He mentioned that the gate systems are not part of the traffic problem.

“The gates do sometimes malfunction, but you know 99 times out of a hundred, if traffic is backed up inside the garage, it’s not because of the gates,” Wilson said.

The number of parking permits sold to students, faculty and staff is 2,475. The number of available parking spots in the garage is 2,149. Wilson said it’s unclear how many people actually use Harmon in a single day.

He’s hoping students will bring forth solutions to these issues rather than complaints. For more information visit the Transit and Parking website.
